Will a Flower with a Broken Stem Survive?
A quick little post to share with fellow gardeners.
I often wondered if a garden flower would live and thrive after the stem had broken, and last week I got my answer. I had a sunflower randomly spring up in my garden, possibly from bird seed that had been transplanted by a squirrel. The plant was still pretty small and healthy - just green leaves and no bloom at that point - when a strong summer storm hit and broke the stem.
I was just about to pull it out of the ground when I realized it would be a good opportunity to see if it would survive. Surprisingly, it kept growing, though low to the ground instead of strong and upright like most sunflowers.
Then last week, to my surprise, it bloomed! Here's the result.
