This year, I’m expanding my kitchen garden and experimenting with starting seeds indoors. Follow along with my successes and failures from the start of the growing season until the end. I’m planting tomatoes, hot chili peppers, lettuce, cucumbers, basil and other herbs. I can’t wait for harvest!

Season’s Greenings at US Botanic Garden
Celebrate the holiday season at the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, DC on Capitol Hill. Each year, the Garden hosts a month-long “Season’s Greenings” event featuring a model train and miniatures made of all natural materials. See the White House, U.S. Capitol and major DC monuments made from tree bark and leaves. Or check out the musical performances held throughout December. And it’s all FREE!

Looking for holiday family fun in Northern Virginia? Check out the Winter Walk of Lights at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. Walk through the garden under shimmering colorful lights shaped like flowers and garden animals. Then stop for a sweet treat at the fire pit. What a delight!

Hummingbirds Love Zinnias!
On a recent visit to my mom’s backyard garden in the Midwest, I discovered a favorite source of nectar for hummingbirds and monarch butterflies – zinnias! For just a few dollars worth of seeds, my mom had turned her yard into a wildlife feeding station. Check out the photos!
Great Smoky Mountain Views from Newfound Gap and Clingmans Dome
On a recent stop through Gatlinburg, TN, we spent a beautiful morning at the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With only a few hours to spare, we journeyed by car to Newfound Gap and Clingmans Dome, and took the hike up to the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower. The views were fabulous! We can’t wait to go again!
